When it comes to railways there are few individuals who have successfully managed to turn a photograph into an art form. Years ago a small number of books appeared which did indeed do this, but the availability of quality material has always been restricted and it is some time since a similar new title has appeared.
Now that omission can be resolved with a new book by Romsey artist Rod Hoyle. Students of railway history may perhaps have seen some odd examples of Rod’s work in the past, most recently in the new ‘Southern Way’ publication and under the theme ‘Real Atmosphere’. In his new work, Rod has carefully selected over 100 of his unpublished black and white views mainly from the steam era, but devotees of modern traction will not be disappointed either. AND IT IS ALL SOUTHERN THROUGHOUT.
The appeal of this new book will be on two fronts, MEMORIES FOR THE ENTHUSIAST and INSPIRATION FOR THE MODELLER.
Rod’s views are the scenes we all saw but rarely if ever managed to capture successfully on film. The memories we have – or wish we had. See the train in its true environment, where the railway is part of the landscape not necessarily the main feature. The staff at work, the passengers, the scenery alongside, the everyday clutter and paraphernalia that make up the contemporary scene, indeed it is even likely there will be some future model dioramas based on Rod’s work.
96 pages. 225 x 225mm.
Illustrations: 104 black and white illustrations.
