During this rail journey the train travels through Italy's south, visiting some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful coastline, skirting Italy's wildest mountains. including Europe's great active volcanoes, Vesuvius and Mount Etna, crossing the threshold between the prosperous north and poorer regions of the south. Starting in the magnificent capital city of Rome with its ancient monuments the train journeys down to the hustle and bustle of Naples, taking in the enchanting Amalfi coast with its crystal clear waters and villages clinging to the rock face. Continuing the journey ending up on the island of Sicily, the train even takes the ferry across to this exotic and extraordinary nation at the foot of Italy.
