Eastern Europe and Africa
In Eastern Europe, examples of steam traction in Russia, Romania, Poland and Turkey are seen. From Africa steam is recorded at work in Zambia, Botswana and South Africa. Some of the most impressive footage comes from Zimbabwe with four types of Garratts featured.
'World Steam' Series
As steam was gradually eliminated from everyday service around the world in the second half of the last century, a literally world-wide phenomenon took hold which reflected the enormous affection in which this most emotive of machines was held.
Firstly steam enthusiasts and film makers set out to record the last workings of steam traction in increasingly obscure corners of the planet. Allied to this was the desire to preserve, restore and operate examples of steam locomotives, wherever possible. This series reflects these trends with colour footage of both survivors at work and preserved engines in all their glory, across the continents.
